FAA to big fliers: Leave your seat belt extenders at home

Enviado há

If you're a large passenger and you've been bringing your own seat belt extender to buckle yourself in on flights, the government has an order for you: Stop it. (travel.usatoday.com) Mais...

Just a note on this, we had an issue when I worked for another airline in Maintenance Control. We found 2 seat belt extenders that did not belong to the airline, but were purchased from a 3rd party. These 3rd party seat belt extenders are not certified with the Airlines Seat Belts. You MUST use the one provided by the airline.

I once got a call that a F/A needed 3 extra seat belt extenders.... I advised her that her a/c had all that was supposed to be there because I did the check on the interior the night before. She told me she needed 3 extra because they were carrying a weight loss group and she had run out of extenders and needed 3 more, and believe it or not one of them needed 2 Seat Belt Extenders... A sight I wish I had missed. If she would have had to use the emergency the only way she could have fit would have been by Explosive De-Compression.

I do not understand how people do this to themselves. There is not rocket science.... Just lay down the knife, fork, and spoon and control what you eat. In my opinion, if you cannot fit in a seat reasonably, then you are not safe to fly, because a crew member will have to risk their life to get you out of a bad situation, and if you get stuck in an emergency exit (like happened to United in DCA when a POS got stuck in the Emergency Exit, emergency personnel had to remove them. If this had been a real criticle situation, they would have died as well as others behind them. If they are that big... Simple... They don't fly. Not trying to mean about it, it is not safe for them, or others around them when it is criticle.

Does anyone know if the FAA (or anyone else) has done evacuation tests with morbidly obese people amongst the test passengers? The bigger issue I have is that these whales are going to get other people killed in an emergency.

Whales???? You obviously dont understand a bigger person's side of the story....Or have you been watching too much reality TV that portrays bigger people as out of control fast food snarfing fools???
not all of us bigger people eat like pigs or whales as you assert. You just wait, one of these days you will learn not to be so mean to one of these whales because just may become one!!!!!!!!!!

I'm up to 60 pounds of weight loss but was never morbidly obese. I was like that because, in hindsight, my diet sucked. I completely changed my lifestyle, lost 60 pounds (and counting) and am starting to lift weights.

If I can do it so can everyone else.

You are exactly right... Over weight is not a disease, or disability... It is a choice.

I hope you do well with it... Problem with a lot of people they cannot see it. I know a person who is quite OVER SIZE.. and after 3 Big Macs, 2 Large Fries, and a Refill on a Large NON-Diet drink he made the comment. I have tried to loose weight, but I can't...

I think there is a better word than "Whales", but POS "Person Of Size" in an emergency situation could cause harm to others. If a POS is on a regional airline and they have to use the emergency exit, many of them will not forwards, side ways, or any other way... As a matter of fact the episode that happened in DC on United when they evacuated the plane was a Boeing 757, not a small size plane, and had a rather large emergency exit, and the person still got stuck. If that was the only door they could have gotten out of for what ever reason and the plane was burning to the ground... People would have either been severely damaged or worse yet killed. Is it fair to me, you, and the rest of the normal size world to forfeit our safety and lively hood so that someone else can fly on a plane. It is just not right. I believe it was SWA had it to where if a POS could not fit into one seat they had to purchase 2 tickets (which is a great idea). Maybe they should come up with a rule to where they have to pass through a mockup Emergency Exit door to qualify to fly. This is fair to everyone. If you can pass through, no fly.

Passenger seat belts are as much theater as the TSA. If you really want to remain in your seat, a five point belt like the pilots wear should be in every seat.

The seat belts on planes today are based on human model statistics collected 100 years ago, and we are pretending people have not changed.

In reality, the seat belts on planes keep you in your seat so that you do not end up in someone elses seat... Not as much meant to keep you from Harm... Don't give the FAA and ideas... Would hate to have to maintian 5 point seat belts on every seat on a plane. Would be bad enough on a 50 seat plane... How about a boeing 747-800 :)

Cannot deny the truth... To say that people cannot control doing this to them selves is crazy. People of massive size have trouble fitting through an emergency exit and if an incident were to happen, due to their years of selfishness may cause many people to die when they try to push them selves through a small opening... People are not cats... They cannot necessarily get their bodies through a hole that there heads fits through.

This whole thing is ridiculous. All the airlines should put super size seats with long seat belts on all their aircraft along with much bigger gas tanks and maybe extend the wing size to compensate for increased loads. I can't imagine these little modifications could cost all that much!

You are talking millions per plane.

I think you're right. Well, that's OK - They can maybe just triple air fares for the rest of us to cover all the costs. No problem.
