Did that PAN AM 727 come over to Dusseldorf from the States or was it stationed in Europe? Technical stops on the way over? It just seems surprising to me that if that 727 had the legs for such flights why everyone is so surprised that we're now using 757's, 737's and A321's etc for trans-Atlantic crossings!
Pan Am operated scheduled services between West Germany and West Berlin from 1950 until 1990 - from 1968 with 727s as German airlines were not allowed to fly to Berlin - see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_American_World_Airways#Internal_German_Services_.28IGS.29_and_other_operations
