Originally constructed as an AT-6 in 1943 and assigned serial 49-3449. She was sent to Long Beach CA in ’51 and later to Moultrie GA, then by ship to Bordeaux France in ’54.
Modified for counter insurgency (COIN) operations in North Africa by the Armee de l Air. Sold to the Ejercito de Aire and sent to Madrid Spain in ’65. Struck off Charge from the Ejercito de Aire in ’81 and sold at auction in ’82 and shipped back to the US.
Restored in Georgia, and raced at Reno as number 51, ‘Yaba Daba Doo’ in ’90 and ’91. Raced again at Reno as number 49, ‘Smokin Sue’ in 2000.
She’s had a number of paint schemes over the years, the latest is in Navy colors with ‘Popeye’ and GTMO on the side. She’s based in Minnesota and flys with the group T-6 Thunder which does fly-bys over events like Memorial Day and July 4th.
