Woman rages after being seated next to ‘big’ passengers on United Airlines plane: ‘I eat salad, okay?’

Enviado há

A woman was reportedly thrown off a flight after raging against “big” passengers she claimed she was wedged between in a middle seat. The unnamed flyer was caught ranting on camera earlier this month on a flight between Las Vegas and Newark airport in New Jersey. The outburst was filmed and later shared online by Norma Rodgers, one of the passengers on the receiving end of the woman’s insults, and has since been viewed more than one million times. Footage of the incident shows the passenger… (www.yahoo.com) Mais...

She wasn’t the slimmest person herself. As pitch and width of cattle carrier seats continue to shrink and passenger girth continues to increase, expect plenty more of this.

I'm a big guy, not necessarily overweight but I have broad shoulders and stand at 6'4". When I'm flying commercial I do my best—depending on the aircraft of course—to aim for a window or aisle seat to let my legs stretch out and not into the seat next to me. Sometimes this isn't possible, and I do end up giving the person next to me a little squeeze. During cruise I also take my shoes off to let my food fit even further under the seat in front of me and get that extra two inches (who among us doesn't need an extra two inches, am I right? ;) ).

Sometimes my fellow seatmate makes a big show of the passive-agressive huffs, sighs, glares, coughs, constant shifting even though I'm not touching them... you know, the usual. Most of the time, however, people are understanding. This woman looks the type that is two seconds from passing value judgements on every person she meets, and I'm sorry to say that's becoming the majority in this country. Whatever happened to just biting your lip and realizing you have to toughen up?

I can relate. I'm unable to hide 6'5" and broad shoulders as well. I know places where I fit, and where I don't. So, there's certain A/C which are avoided altogether (CRJ-200's come to mind), and portions of A/C where I can't go- for the betterment of fellow passengers!

mentioning the CRJ-200.. You think that is cramped... try and ERJ-145 :)

Well, flying Commercial is as was said in the "FOREST GUMP" movie, "You never know what you are going to get.

Commercial aviation is like flying in a waste pool from a pig farm. No intent to slight any of the pigs.

The coach seats are much too small, and the only way for the airlines to protect their revenue is to protect their oversized passengers and dismiss the complaints of those who think that, because they paid for a seat, they shouldnot have to share it.

I have been seated in many different uncomfortable locations and situations... One on a 737 towards the back of the plane were 2 guys already seated and I got the last seat... Or at least part of one. The other 2 guys had both armrests up and plopped guts 1/2 in to my seat... I was sitting sideways and "God Bless" the Flight Attendant who recognized me.... She called me by name and said: "I Talked to the Captain and asked if you would join him in the Cockpit"... I jumped on that one... UGH!... When I got to the Cockpit (knowing both crew members) said that the FA told them I was in quite a "Pinch"!

When my wife and i fly.. we buy the center seat to avoid this issue.. and more times than not, the airline was very appreciative abd refunded that seats cost after our fligh.. redneck first class.. love it..

These days, anyone plopped in a legacy carrier's middle seat is most likely to have paid the cheapest fare, cause I know precisely no one who ever wants to sit there.

So, I have zero sympathy for the complaining individual. Maybe just having a bad day, but regardless- if it's that big of a deal (and that length of flight), then pony up & pay to sit at the pointy end. There are choices if a paying customer wants them. If said individual can't afford a big chair, that's not the fault of those around her/ him.

It might have been all that was left, and the ever more happy and plentiful over weight folks that populate the nation were not my friends when I couldn't get anything but a middle seat. When you airline around the country to satisfy the moods and whims of the pseudo a-listers in the charter, low buck corporate world, (managed aircraft), they don't pony up & pay for us to sit at the pointy end. Except on the way home!

You may not agree or like what he says. The truth hurts because he is absolutely correct.

We can at least agree the spectacle made by this woman was inexcusable. Why not just politely get up to use the lav, and speak privately with a flight attendant? Personally it's not a big deal to me (I'm not an elitist, if that's what the above insinuation was). However, if it was a big deal to the woman in question, there were many proactive ways to not be in that situation to begin with.

I am also a big guy at 6'4" and a relatively trim 200, so, no I don't fit well in middle seats either. My comment was neither to insinuate that you were an elilist nor to really agree with her tactics. I said what I meant because mostly the pseudo glam of a corporate pilot is just that and when they buy you a middle seat between two blobs on a full airplane you are stuck. Civility is dead, the lefties make it ever so clear.

Simple solution is to book early or pay for a better seat (or walk!).

One thing I like about flying regional's is that there are very few with a Middle Seat! Maybe a small advantage, but at least you are not squeezed in!

it has been noted, complained about and legislation pushed to get airlines to put in larger seats,as the seat size has been shrinking these past few years..unfortunately,its not a quick process, and also unfortunately, when flights are booked full,a person may get whatever seat is available, and that is often a middle seat..
