A strong dollar and an increasing reputation of poor and disrespectful treatment of visitors by the US Border authorities will suppress European travelers and all will lose.
wopri
Wolfgang Prigge 8
There are lots of reports of disrespectful treatment even to Canadians.
mariofer

Disrespectful treatment to all. I am US citizen, known traveler program participant and I am sad to say that after traveling all over the world, including countries where "US Citizen" is a four letter word, I have received the worse treatment from my own country's Border officers.

US Border people are not there for our entertainment. They DO NOT have a sense of humor. They are not interested in small talk. They are there to do a job. They are NOT ambassadors. They are all business.
djames225
djames225 4
Wrong....they are an ambassador to the US as they are the front line of what visitors see..if they are a disrespectful bunch, that bodes poorly on the rest...doing a good job is 1 thing, but being a horse's ass, while doing it, is another.
joelwiley
joel wiley 3
Disagree. They are cops, the border is their beat, their job is to stop bad things (people, drugs, munitions, etc) from entering. Every passing body is a potential perp. (When your only tool is a hammer, everything tends to look like a nail). They should be expected to be courteous and professional. Facilitating your stay is not high on their priority list. Being a horse's ass is not professional.
djames225
djames225 0
Ok I will agree with you to a point joel, about their being enforcement officers...however they are also ambassadors to the US in a sense..think about it..if you have a visitor to your city and the cops are complete horse's butts to that visitor, that could send that visitor a message about the whole city as being impolite etc.
devsfan
ken young 0
Ok..lets look at this from another angle. "define "horse's butts"....In the context to which you refer.
djames225
djames225 1
asses, disrespectful, thinking their #2 doesnt stink
devsfan
ken young 0
That's a descriptor. I was looking for examples of the types of behavior which make you state this claim. "Rude" doesn't cut it.
djames225
djames225 1
No you were looking for my definition of horse's butts which is exactly what I gave you...and if you cant think of what someone acting that way towards someone else entails, oh well...and to that end, this is an aviation forum not a geopolitical henhouse...to which I shall apoligize to my fellow aviation enthusiasts for my prolonged escapades to try and prove a point!
devsfan
ken young -1
Nope. These are not Ambassadors. They are law enforcement officers who's job it is to be the first line of defense of our national security.
As far as I am concerned, we should pull some of our front line troops stationed in allied nations and put them in our airports, seaports and along our borders. We live in a different world since 9/11. Sorry if you don't agree.
djames225
djames225 2
What has always got me, and still does to this day, is how the US feels it was only their nation that suffered in 9/11..I lost 6 close friends that day in tower 1...we all live in a different world since then and YES your front line defense. as you refer to them as, ARE ambassadors to your country...do a job, do it right BUT dont be an ass about it because that will be the first thing folks will notice!
joelwiley
joel wiley 3
it could be that the Americans see it as first person national because 1) the attack was on their land, 2) it hit iconic symbols of American industry and capitalism, and a narrow world view focus.

As for ambassadors, CBP Customer Service Pledge to Travelers:
https://www.cbp.gov/travel/customer-service/cbp-pledge-to-travelers
Item #1: We pledge to cordially greet and welcome you to the United States.

Definition of cordial:
1a : showing or marked by warm and often hearty friendliness, favor, or approval a cordial welcome : politely pleasant and friendly

What the head office is touting may not have been internalized by some of the front-line troops.
djames225
djames225 3
Its very possible, joel, that it was because the attacks were on their land but it also hit the world..the WTC was just that, a meeting place of the world..a colleague's aunt and uncle were on flight 93
joelwiley
joel wiley 2
One of our neighbors was a flight attendent. RIP
djames225
djames225 1
Amen joel..may they all RIP knowing that the "mastermind" was found, and dealt with, albeit 10 yrs later.
devsfan
ken young -1
I have no idea to what you refer when you claim "the only one"...What is meant by that patently passive aggressive term?
Perhaps you missed the geographic boat when it was established that the WTC was located HERE in the US.
No, they are not ambassadors. While on the job they must be diligent and focused all the time. Every person who intends to cross the border MUST be looked at as a suspect. It has to be that way. I don't like it, but I don't get to make that policy. All of which means these people do not have time for pleasantries. And the more one attempts to "break the ice" the more likely they become candidates for additional scrutiny.
Look, this comes STRAIGHT from an LEO who works the Border.
As you approach the station, have your documents ready for examination. If wearing sunglasses and/or hat, remove it/them. Make so sudden movements. Do NOT Reach for anything in the vehicle. Answer all questions directly without embellishment. Your stop at the border will be over before you know it and you'll be on your way.....If you want to be welcomed by a "door greeter" don't come here.

joel wiley 2

There are lots of reports of disrespectful treatment of US citizens, it is institutional, so don't miss the obvious question of where did these people come from before they became Federal Employees with more authority than they have ever held and little or no accountability? Another government program. P.S.: Most spent very little time at an airport, let alone flying, before this government jobs program became available.
Farang
Neal Geyer 4
We can report the same from several entries and will not visit anymore the US, as long the Federal Employees are disrespectful. Most people and the country are great.
Scjemail44

You should see our government in Bejing. The Chinese have to get a visa to come to the US. Everybody must wait in line for hours, corporate presidents to regular tourists. If something is wrong with the application our US government worker throws the paperwork across the desk an says it's not right, correct it and stand in line tomorrow. When it is closing time they send those in line home and they have to try again another day. TALK ABOUT RUDE. THESE PEOPLE ARE GOING TO SPEND MONEY IN THE US AND OUR GOVERNMENT IS TOO STUPID TO SEE IT. THEY ALSO ARE HUMAN BEINGS AND DESERVE RESPECT.
The French make appointments treat the people with respect and everybody is happy.
I guess I should not be surprised. When the government took over a whorehouse in Nevada it went broke under their "leadership". Really, what does it take to run a Whorehouse? Is it really that difficult to sell sex?
joelwiley
joel wiley 3
I think you may be mistaking the feds running a brothel with running a 2 car funeral.
The facts on the Nevada brothel story can be found here:

Bringing it back to aviation context, the Federal Brothel Failure story doesn't fly.

Not just Beijing I think. I do not think that the federal government took over a whorehouse in Nevada so deem that part of the diatribe as irrelevant.

TSA agents are GROSSLY under trained. The qualifications to become a TSA agent are woefully inadequate. Once TSA agents became vested in the federal pension system, meaning they were brought into which ever union the represents the other DHS workers, all bets were off.
TSA personnel no longer have to be concerned with getting fired for poor conduct. The union will protect them at all costs.

HA! Try going to Quebec and attempt to speak English to any customer service person. Try going to Casino de Montreal and ask the dealers to speak English to a table full of US players.
French Canadians have utter contempt for Americans and even less empathy toward Anglophones.

joelwiley

Similar to a lot of Americans in stubbornness I think. The excursion brought to mind George Bernard Shaw's "all progress depends on the unreasonable man". Recent events bring it to mind again.

I was referring to businesses. Not road signs. Those are still bi-lingual. The French Canadians sort of hold their noses and deal with having to see English lettering. Look I have several friends who are either Canadian citizens or have relocated here to the States. Two of which hail from Quebec.

No we won't. My experiences with most Euro tourists has been at best mediocre. At worst, negative. These people tend to be angry, pushy, arrogant and demanding. Lat year at Disney World my neighbor's 10 year old daughter was pushed to the pavement by a Euro lady who thought she was too important to stand on line in a orderly fashion. Euros don't like the concept of standing on line and waiting their turn. French tourists expect Americans to know how to communicate in French. Euros are notorious for their cheapness. They offer very small gratuities or they will just stiff the server.
As far as I am concerned, they can stay the heck home.
Flame away. I don't care.

There is always the option to travel to a place where you are welcome, and there are still lots of those that are worth a visit.
djames225

I agree Wolfgang...and to have someone on here mentioning thin skin when talking the difference between respect and doing a job properly makes me a tad angry.

As far as I know the Israeli security is way better than any other, but they still managed to treat passengers as human beings the last time I went there.
andyc852
Andy Cruickshank 7
The problem in this case is not TSA. Try ICE and CBP as the responsible agencies. It is not a requirement to do your job properly and be rude and disrespectful doing it. You can be compliant with the rules and do it in a manner that respects the person. It is called courtesy, a rare phenomenon these days.
djames225
djames225 3
It isnt a matter of having thin skin..it's a matter of respect..and to that end, I have travel to attend to in the coming while and will not be landing/transfering stateside as always happened in the past...if they want to act like asses, gonna get treated like asses.

My wife and I enjoy traveling to Europe once or twice a year, and if we have to get visas, we will. The formation of the EU has made our travels much more convenient. Why anyone would be stupid enough to want the EU and it's currency to fail is beyond me.

This will be good news for North American Tourist operators for substantial number of US citizens will opt to spend their tourist dollars in Canada and the USA rather than go through the hassle of obtaining a visa if it ever goes into effect. Conversely the European industrial counterpart will be hit hard by the loss of US dollars in a sector already harmed by fears of terrorism. I would expect the British it ignore any new restrictions.
wopri
Wolfgang Prigge 6
Actually, in tourism you want people from other countries to visit you, as that means fresh money coming in. Of course you want more foreign visitors to your country than your people visiting elsewhere. Having only your own people visit is just recirculating the same money that was already in the economy.

Disgusted lately to hear that we pay for membership in the EU, I feel the EU officials try to effect too much power over trade. With this they affect our standards of living for example on lead use and lead-free solder. One American who feels the EU can "buzz off". They are more suitable managing a traditional, narrow minded setting of conservative rigidly socialized subjects. Hey; isn't that what Europe is?

With an attitude like that, no wonder they feel betrayed, resentment and anger...what the hell about all the European lives lost helping the US during WWII, Vietnam, Korean War??
devsfan
ken young 0
What about them? If you remember your history. We were not a participant in WW II until the Japanese Empire attacked Pearl Harbor which essentially forced our hand. We then fought the war in not one but TWO theaters. But for our entry into WW II to essentially bail Allied Europe out from being over run by the Germans, A LOT more European lives would have been lost. And most of them would not be speaking German as a first language.
Betrayed? All the military aid and fiscal aid we give to the Euros? And you say THEY feel betrayed?....here's a newsflash for ya. But for our trade with EU nations, and that is not just tourism, buit trade for hard goods as well, the EU would be getting bent over a table trying to deal with another large economy to its East.
I don't want to hear it.
djames225
djames225 2
And you just proved my point..We this and We that...here's a newsflash for you..the US wasnt the only country over there fighting with Allied Europe against the Germans OR the Japanese!..have you ever heard of the Korean conflict or the Hong Kong conflict??...and if you opened your eyes before jumping off the wagon with a machete in hand wanting to tear people apart, you might want to read WHY I stated what I did to the previous poster!
KiwiKobi
Jakob Ludwig 0
You mean the European lives lost fighting in a European conflict started by Europeans? You mean the Vietnam War that was started by the French, who begged for US help then pulled out when we arrived? The Korean War is a fair point, sure. But Europe has still benefited from the existence of South Korea, just as the US has.
djames225
djames225 3
To group a bunch of nations together (European's) when describing a conflict instigated by a single country's off his rocker dictator, is not cool...the french didnt ask for help and then pulled out, as you indicate in the Vietnam conflict..the Geneva Accord 0f 1954 signed by the US, France and others had France vacate French Indochina (which had roots back to the early 1200's)...the actual Vietnam war was instigated by the cultural differences, etc, of the pro communist North Vietnam and anti communist South Vietnam..and the US wasnt the only nation who lost men in those days.
