Just as business brought on it's own woes with terrible labor practices, so too have the unions brought on their own set of woes. The pendulum swings both ways.

This Union / Non- Union argument will go on forever and politicians will forever get involved in those affairs, whether they should our not. We have heard it all before in one form or another and will probably hear it all again. As there is no argument that could be fostered by either side that would change an opposing viewpoint, I think it would behoove most of us to just sit back and see how this plays out.

Well said. Nothing to gain by taking sides here as there are sound arguments either way, and this is emotionally charged. The employees will ultimately determine their destiny.

If you want a strong union state move to a place like Illinois. If you prefer a strong non union state SC will do. I'm guessing Boeing didn't move there just for the climate. So it stands to reason SC's governor will stand with Boeing.

They said we couldn't build tires in SC. We now make more tires than any state in the country. They said we couldn't build cars in SC, now every BMW X-Series in the world is built here. GE builds some of the largest gas turbines in the world in Greenville across the street from where I'm sitting. We build guns, heavy equipment, high tech carbon fibers, robots, solar panels, transmissions...... I could go on and on and on. Guess what? Ain't a DAMN union in any of those places. Get over it.

Ahhh Nikki Haley... I can promise you, she will fight tooth and nail for any business that comes along. After all, if someone is buying, this state is always more than selling.... Soul included.

This is good... That is why Boeing went there... The unions are way out dated, and are self serving...

Unions were arguably the biggest single factor allowing a healthy middle class to evolve and thrive.
Like it or not, much of our country's heart and soul is thanks to the unions of last century.

Agreed. Unions and labor laws created "good" manufacturing jobs out of poor paying, unsafe and dirty mill/factory work of the 1920s. Business has no incentive to create those "good" jobs on its own. They do what they need to do to get by.

As a standing elected public official it is not within Nikki Haley's purview to decide or attempt to influence a union bodies vote or recruitment in an open shop state. I am not a union maven or even a union fan, but this discussion was very well covered on this forum some years back and a few of the old hands probably remember some of my original comments that have been wiped by FA. The essence of my comment is I hope and suspect the union will lose, but for Nikki to decide to insert her opinion now, when she was adamant that the NLRB had no place to do so when the plant was being built is more government of convenience.

Another example of supposedly small government repugnicans interfering with the private sector, attempting to come between private citizens and their employers. If a Democratic politician came out as forcefully in favor of a union vote for this plant the hypocrites at Fox Noise would be baying at the moon predicting the end of our society as we know it.

Federal law prohibits anyone from interfering with a group of employees who wish to organize and seek a collective bargaining agreement. That includes over reaching (and I might add ignorant) Governors. She can stamp her feet and hold her breath til she turns blue, truth is, she is prohibited from trying to alter the process.

In this case it's not the employees attempting to organize from within. It's the union trying to force a vote from the outside.

According to Federal law, one cannot hold a vote without sufficient A card's on file. Since signatures on an A card must be from employees it is not the Union but employees who have authorized a vote.

Study of the Labor movement used to be High School curriculum.

Yeah.... I know all about that, and most people don't realize what they got until its too late and then they regret it... Unions are just like politicians... They tell you what you want to hear, and then they don't deliver... The last union I was in, we never heard from them until it was negotiating time.

Right on Governor you do what you have to do. Keep that union crowd up in Washington and out of South Carolina.

They will have a fine product there without the problems a union brings with it. The employees will have good benefits and wages without paying the union thugs there cut for nothing. Boeing will not have to worry about slowdowns or strikes like WA state bunch does holding them hostage and no AC going out the door.

Nothing? How could anyone consider union money laundering for the Democrat party nothing? How are those poor bicoastal politicians to survive or purchase votes.

I did not see Labor in the Constitution so the Governor has every right to express the views of the State where those same workers pay much lower taxes, don't have to pay McDonald's workers $15 per hour, enjoy a Southern life style and best of all watch their boy Trey Gawdy stick it to the Yankees. Constitutionally Labor relations are a State's right and she is exercising them even if the bought and sold corrupt NLRB doesn't like it.

Labor Relations are the sole domain of NRLB and has been for nearly 100 years. The US Supreme Court has proved that in case after case. The basic theory is to protect a worker's right to decide if they wish representation or not. It is not up to a Company or Government representative.

The average Boeing employee in South Carolina earns $23.40 an hour. Same employee in Washington State earns $44.57 an hour. The union protects the workers from being fired for no reason or for something unrelated to their employment, in South Carolina, the so called "Right to work laws" give the employer the right to fire any employee for any reason at any time. And, of course, the cheaper labor force in SC seems to be somewhat challenged by the tasks, as virtually every plane build in South Carolina has to be repaired or fixed in Everett.

preacher1 10
I will say that $23.47 per hour for this part of the world ain't bad money. Cost of living is quite a bit lower and it is very good. I can't really argue about the at will firing BUT that can be turned around, to the point that the unions may make it impossible to get rid of a sorry employee that needs to go for the good of the rest of the workforce. I really doubt that the wage has anything to do with plane quality coming out of that plant. AAs with anything new, there are teething problems. All that said, I really think that the governor needs to remain independent and neutral in this, regardless of personal feelings.
Mr. Grady, I also know that you are very pro-union and I do not attempt to change your mind, but just add another viewpoint.

How much property tax do you pay on a $150,000 house in WA? How much house will $150,000 buy in WA? How much income tax do you pay on that $44.57/hr. How much do you pay in union dues out of that? Unfortunately your pro union anti SC rhetoric doesn't match with reality. Come on down and learn the truth and stop reading your own press.

I live here in WA. That 44.57 dollars here doesn't go very far. Have you tried buying a house here lately. Helped a friend look in Gig Harbor, miles from Boeing. 400k might get you started. I have worked for unions that were low-key and negotiated fairly with the employer/employee in mind. The union dues were worth it because the management had respect for the employee And that respect didnt didn't have to come from a threat of a law suite or from some government agency stepping in.Getting rid of bad employees...no doubt a bit of a trial. But, every place has bad employees. I have tried to get rid of my share and there is very little difference with a union as opposed to without. HR is scared shitless of lawsuits.

Well, is she going to send in the State militia, dogs and firehoses to break up the elections? Wouldn't be the first time for a Governor. So who will better respond to the rank and file needs?
preacher1
preacher1 1
Well, it doesn't say anything about a card signing to determine if they even want to have an election. Can the Union just request an election uninvited now?

I fail to see why someone who believes in small government thinks she has the right to get involved in a negotiation between two parties with a direct stake in the outcome. This issue is between the workers and the company. If a party believes that they are being slighted then they have access to the courts.

It's because Boeing is essentially paying her to do so. Her campaign gets contributions for anti-union organizations who represent corporations like Boeing. It's pay to play. She's gotten paid, now she's going to do as she's been told to do.

I find it interesting -and heartening, actually- to see such general support in this forum for unions. They are not perfect, no doubt. Unfortunately they don't get a lot of press other than the bad. However, I have no doubt that without their influence we'd be a two class society, with a very wide no-mans gap between the two. Consider how that would work with college tuition at ~$60K (BU) and up.
A three tier society can achieve some success against that, but a two class? You'd have an elitist society. The non-union mentality is badly short sighted.
preacher1
preacher1 3
I don't think that the non- union crowd is short sighted but if we are not at a 2 class society right now, I would really hate to see it. What middle class is left will never reach the top income level, union or not. I don't have the answers but what we are doing is definitely not working.

I'm ALPA, so I have seen the good and the bad of unions. But, with so many airline pilots being unionized, that is why I would think you would see a lot of pro-union sentiment here. Speaking on the issue presented in the squawk, it's obvious why Boeing chose South Carolina for a non-union plant. It is a conservative, and anti-union state. So, Boeing knew they would get strong support there. While I have a number of conservative values, the Republican party is 100% against the blue collar worker and wants to do everything possible to keep them subjugated. This Nikki Haley character is their perfect stooge to make that happen. By the way, in a free society, how exactly can you "fight attempts" to unionize at a plant? If we are in fact a free society, it is up to that plant's employees to choose to be non-union or union.
preacher1
preacher1 2
Is it possible that ALPA members may have seen some of that bad that turns them against a union membership? Not all within ALPA has been rosy and some may sill belong just out of necessity rather than wanting to. DAL does have a Non-Union group with benefits actually a little better than ALPA, negotiated annually, but life is made so miserable on them, it is unsure of how long it will last.

Brian Bishop 1
Your statement that "the Republican party is 100% against the blue collar worker and wants to do everything possible to keep them subjugated" is patently false. Conservatives and Republicans are for freedom and opportunity for EVERYONE. The NLRB rules for organizing were written by the unions and are heavily weighted in their favor. Boeing and other companies have limited ability to fight union attempts to come between them and their employees. In this case the Governor is doing that in their stead. If this were an employe driven movement, so be it, but it is being pushed by the union who want nothing more than to get their nose under the Boeing SC tent.

Oh, and lets not forget that Boeing has received over $1,000,000,000.00 in tax incentives to build the plant that employs 7700 people
