Video: Three-hour tarmac ordeal turns into pizza party

Enviado há

After severe weather forced an Atlanta-bound Delta flight to divert to Knoxville, Tenn., on Monday night, the ensuing three-hour tarmac wait turned into a pizza party when airport employees arranged for pies to be delivered to the waiting passengers, escorted by a police car. Why does the media insist upon so much sensationalism? The original flight, DAL2101 an A320, did not "circle Hartsfield-Jackson for hours" as the report says. Instead, it had flown for +/- 2hr 43min (normally about 2-1/2 hr flight) when it was diverted to KTYS due to storms at KATL. At KTYS it did sit on the apron (not the runway) for 3+ hours. KTYS doesn't usually accommodate an A320-sized plane at the gate. The continuing flight to KATL was 39 minutes, arriving about 4 hours late. http://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL2101/history/20130318/2000Z/KBOS/KATL

Actually when the A320 equipment is "scheduled" to arrive in TYS they can accommodate it and it will park at the gate. They probably had many other diverts at the station like they always do when the WX takes a turn for the worst in ATL, but they will park it at a gate pending gate availabilty.

Pretty cheap PR. Only the dumbest pax would be upset at waiting out severe storms.

No, Kentucky. But raised in Chicago. Pizza stops in northern Illinois. No real pizza around Kpah.

I don't mind Delta getting a little good press, but the truth is after years of holding people on planes for hours on end without relief (incoming and outgoing) the DOT now mandates food and water after a couple of hours, and to be let off after three.

The fines are rather stiff, so the sharp pencil boys (accountants) have discovered pizza is cheaper, even less than airport catering that usually supplies flight grub. Wait until the airport authorities hear food is being served bypassing the rents charged terminal eateries.

Passengers would be advised to examine their slice of any chain "delivery pizza" because it can be difficult to tell the difference between the crust and the box it comes in.

It is unclear whether this was a Delta initiative or an airport thing. If it was Delta they need to promote the individual with enough foresight to get it organized and ensure the manifest was turned into returning customers.

Sad thing is, someone will find a way to fire someone else for this good deed...

Red cells, flat tires and other issues and the public still wants to go. 1976 727 gnu JFK flat tire at the gate and passangers said there more that inflated why can't we go. Do you ever wonder on lease eqpt. Service crashes where you know they shouldn't have gone, but the passengers, music Hollywood, insisted on going and have more control than they should.

Reminds me of an American Eagle story a few years ago, I think it was back in 2010, but the Captain ordered pizza for the passengers after the flight was diverted and delayed. The Capt. paid for it out of his own pocket.

The plane was not stuck on the runway. That would have closed the airport. It was at or near a gate; passengers could leave. If the runway were made out of Tarmac, the plane would have been stuck. Coal tar poured over crushed rock would not support an airliner. It was on the asphalt or concrete apron at the airport.

Everything at the airport is the runway, the engines stall, the captain is the only one who could fly, and even if you're in the middle of the ocean, the tower is giving you a clearance...
