Austin Man Pleads Guilty to Pointing Laser at Police Helicopter

Enviado há

A 25-year-old man is facing up to five years in prison after he beamed a green laser at an Austin police helicopter flying overhead, distracting the pilot and delaying his landing. Gabriel Soza Ruedas Jr. pleaded guilty on Monday to aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft. His arrest was the first in Central Texas for the federal charge signed into law in 2012. He could be billed a maximum $250,000 fine for the offense. (www.statesman.com) Mais...

Punishment: a minimum of three months in jail, and a fine based upon 20% of his adjusted gross income. Instead of fixed amounts for fines, I think it's time we took a percentage of the convicted's income. If they're on the dole, take them off and see if that won't have any influence from the family! Publicize the heck out of it and then stand back while the bleeding hearts talk about how cold-blooded it would be.

I agree with Jim. $250k for someone living paycheck to paycheck is about as irresponsible as the crime they committed. Make the fine hurt and not cause the person to file bankruptcy where the government gets nothing.

Why would someone do this, I just don't get it? Was the guy hopeful that the plane would crash?

Why do people do it... lets see?

1. Alcohol
2. Drugs
3. Low level of intelligence
4. Idiotic sense of humor
5. Nothing else better to do
6. Criminal Behavior
7. " Impress " someone
8. Wants to see a plane crash
9. Person is a total jackass
10. Didn't think anything of it - aka - 100 percent F' stupid

I was laser'ed out of Newark and it was a pretty powerful beam. I couldn't see anything for a good 10-12 seconds and thats a lifetime - especially hand flying and close to the ground. Even worse for a help given the hand/eye co-ordination needed to hover, etc.

Some of those more powerful lasers can actually damage your eyes forever in just a few milliseconds. They are not your garden-variety lasers.

I own a relatively powerful laser for optics that is 350mw. The laser pointers you get in catalogues are less than 3mw. Can you imagine how dangerous it can be. And there are 2 Watt handheld lasers sold online!

I just can't wait to see if a democrat will defend the rights of the people to have lasers, and beg for mercury when people use them irresponsibly. Wouldn't that be "funny"
