Robert, I wish you well, but you'd better hurry before Collins really gets their hooks into the services offered and not offered any longer.

I spent 30 years in the US defense contractor world before retiring, and either watched, or was part of, over ten different acquisitions, one of them by Collins. Without fail, every one of them followed the same path with just different timelines for the results -- the acquisition was done because the buying company saw a bottom line improvement in their balance sheet in the future if they owned the business they wanted, and the timeline included a serial chain of changes in the acquired business for the benefit of the buyer - not the acquired company, their shareholders, or employees ( and sometimes not even for the acquired company's customers...)
they saw some subset of the acquired company's products, features, processes, or stuff like patents, followed a timeline that kept those things and shed the rest or started charging (initially or more expensively) for them.
I've really enjoyed being involved with many of FlightAware's features, and I really DO hope that they can keep it like it is now, or continue to improve it, but from what I've seen in the US defense contractors' arena, and from Collins in the past, I think it will be a BIG exception to history if that happens. I think that many of the other comments posted for this story were from people that have been through the same things I've described.
I really do wish them well for the future, I just didn't want them to be surprised by some likely changes that Collins will want to make. :)

Sometimes big business will buy a successful competitor just to close them down and remove competition. After they have the orphaned employees train their replacements.
