Premier 1A jet crashes into house near South Bend airport

Enviado há

Local news media say an aircraft has crashed into a home near South Bend Regional Airport in northern Indiana. The South Bend Tribune, WSBT-TV and WNDU-TV report the neighborhood where the plane crash was being evacuated because of a gas leak. WSBT reported on its Twitter feed that the plane was a Lear jet. UPDATE: Surveillance video captures twin-engine plane crash into homes

Two surveillance cameras from nearby businesses captured what could be the only videos of a twin-engine jet falling from the sky Sunday afternoon.

N26DK Premier 1A crash caught on CCTV

Black and white video of the actual crash, pilot witness statement;

I was waiting to taxi when SBN tower told us they were working an emergency. Unfortunately, I saw the whole thing. They attempted to land, looked like they were going to land about 3/4 of the way down the runway and went around. Started a slight right turn, nose pitched up,steep turn to the right, very nose high then rolled on its back. Spun twice inverted rolled back over and hit the ground. I didn't see any smoke. CFR at SBN took off immediately.
What a horrible sight to see. God bless them and their families. Amazed that there were survivors.

Just saw this on my local news....It is almost unbelievable that this jet didn't explode on impact...I saw on earlier post that this jet didn't explode due to the way it is designed but I just have to say given the planes spiraling and steep descent it HAS to be something greater than that...I mean yeah you are taught that if you are go to have to land off field it is better to kill all of the electricity to reduce the risk of an fuel ignition but this thing hit three houses and one would assume that all three had power...Not only that but usually whenever a plane falls out of the sky and there is no fire everyone says that the plane obviously was out of fuel but the catch twenty two in this story is that this plane had plenty....People died but at the same time just the fact that two didn't is a miracle.

Actually an empty fuel tank full of fumes is more deadly then a full one.

One of the survivors is in serious condition, but one is in fair condition - neither with life-threatening injuries - that is truly amazing considering the stall and impact.

Isn't this the third crash of a Premier jet in the past month or so, all fatal?

Yes it is....1 in France....1 in Georgia... And this one. All with fatalities.

Makes you wonder if there is a similar problem that keeps reoccuring. Jack Roush crashed one of these at Oshkosh a few years back, got too slow.

That was a major mix up between a departing Piper Cub - which had been told to turn left immediately on take-off, and N6JR who turned on final cleared to land, only to find a Piper Cub rolling down the runway.

N6JR should have added full power and gone around, or if he'd been monitoring departures would have known the Piper was going to turn out of his way.

Instead the aircraft (N6JR) had an aerodynamic stall.

I wonder if the gear was retracted or extended at the crash site.......and position of the flaps??
tarbaby
phil gibson 1
There is a min-maneuvering speed at different bank angles.....may have gotten too slow....maybe?? Just another angle.

From news reports the the pilot made a go around. Better on the ground on the airport than off...and we see the result. The electrical/mechanical issue may have involved the landing gear, so he went around and then something else happened. Tough day. RIP those killed.

I was at a park near the KRVS yesterday. I heard the aircraft take off. I didn't think anything of it, Its a strange feeling.

The descent is probably accurate, but I expect the immediate climb to FL170 is an error in FAA data.

Here's more on the crash. Sad that these kind of things always seem to happen over populated areas.

Not always. Remember sully? He intentionally missed all those buildings in NYC. Seems to me this accident was an out of control thing or else the pilot would have tried to put it down away from population. Any area for the initial impact would have been better.

Sully made an emergecny landing, Wes unfortunately experienced an aerodynamic stall to which there was zero chance of recovery and crashed. Still amazing two survived.

Most likely it didn't catch fire due to the aircraft design of the Premier1. Also to add to this story. We do not know the identities of the people killed on the plane. Wes Caves is also a licensed pilot.

Another reason too, is that the FD was on scene incredibly quickly since they were already enroute to the airport, just a few blocks away. The immediately got a foam blanket in place. As of the last briefing a short time ago, they still have fuel pooled in the basement of the house that they are keeping contained & covered.

From NPR new information on the owner of the downed Jet:

"The plane is registered to 7700 Enterprises of Montana LLC in Helena, Mont. The company is owned by Wes Caves and does business as DigiCut Systems in Tulsa, Okla. It makes window film and paint overlay for automobiles. Herwig said he did not know how many people were aboard the jet.

A woman identifying herself as Caves' wife answered the phone at their home Sunday and said, "I think he's dead," before hanging up."

ICAO international transponder squawk code 7700 is an emergency.

In this case, though very ironic, is the actual address for Digicut Systems Tulsa location.

Updated info from wsbt.com: Premier 1 N26DK from Roy Jones Airport in Tulsa, OK. On approach the pilot reported an electrical problem, according to the FAA. The pilot made several landing attempts and on the last attempt, it stalled out and crashed into the homes.

The original dispatch from ARFF to South Bend Fire was, that they had a plane that had no electrical power, so they lost radio contact, and that he only had partial gear down on intial approach. As the South Bend fire units were responding, one of the FD units saw the plane crash in the neighborhood after his failed approach.
