Delta Air Lines is set to furlough 1,941 pilots in October, the carrier said in a memo seen by Reuters on Monday that noted the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic and plunging air travel demand. U.S. airlines have warned they will need to furlough tens of thousands of workers once $25 billion in U.S. government stimulus funds run out in September. The aid, which covered employees’ pay, was meant to help them weather the pandemic and preserve jobs until a recovery, but travel remains depressed.… (reut.rs) Mais...

So much training and experience lost. But what's the company to do? The government feeding trough is going to dry up soon, and the expense can't be justified.

Take the 15% pay cut with the caveat the pay rate has to be re-normalized before any new hires can be made. That's a win-win: most everyone who wants to stays employed, and the pay cuts have a flexible expiration date that exactly coincides with actual recovery.

Not good news.... they have to wait until the end of October because of the Cares Act.

Cares act expires September 30. They can furlough October 1.

due to the terms of the care act,the furloughs cannot be done officially until the end of october..union rules require a certain amount to time for the company to give notices..they are joining united and american..its not just pilots, but a lot of ground personnel and flight attendants as well..you can offer "buyout packages" as has always been the case,to avoid furloughs, but due to the circumstances of the pandemic, that is not enough..people are returning to the airiens for some trips that are necessary, but the big vacations and lots of business travel are on hold,so the airlines have lost billions in revenue..its not the same as a union going pn strike and having to cancel or close down...

As for Flight Attendants, as you mentioned, around 8000 will be furloughed, along with folks in other departments.

does anyone still think deregulation was a good idea?

This has little if anything to do with deregulation

The pilots need to take 50% cuts to remain active and qualified.. lower the monthly guaranteed hours .. somthing better than hitting the streets..

Nope, I'd rather keep the full pay when I come back from a furlough. Giving up pay will be nearly impossible to get back. At some point they WILL have to recall us.

And yet they're planning to expand routes. Not possible

They aren't expanding. They're merely bringing back some service that was cut, based on what they see in the way of future bookings, I suspect.

only if they cut existing routes. Had a flight in November, and Delta was basically on their way to cancel the flight. Moved my arrival by 4h (later) But i couldn't find my flights on their website to book, even though there were open seats on the planes.
