Yeah the guy's a loony, but that looks like it was fun as hell from his perspective.
He probably thought that flying a real airplane was the same as what he did on Microsoft Flight Simulator.

This guy whoever he is did know how to fly. His only problem besides stealing the plane was landing. As the saying goes any landing you walk away from is a good landing since he did walk away even after crashing the plane it was a good landing.
Guess again, folks. This guy is a 51 year old alcoholic whose father owns Paramount Banner towing. And, he did not "land": he more or less (unintentionally I suppose) crashed. Alcohol does screw up one's ability to judge height after all. He turned himself in on Thursday, I think it was. He has no private pilot license, just a few hours under a student cert. And yes the CG has a beach....so what.
There is an R&R camp on that base for all branches of the military, and they have access to that beach.
