National Opt-Out Day Called Against Invasive Body Scanners

Enviado há

Air travelers, mark your calendar. An activist opposed to the new invasive body scanners in use at airports around the country just designated Wednesday, Nov. 24 as a National Opt-Out Day. He’s encouraging airline passengers to decline the TSA’s technological strip searches en masse on that day as a protest against the scanners, as well as the new “enhanced pat-downs” inflicted on refuseniks. Wonderful...lets go ahead and clog up an already congested air travel system on one of the busiest days of the year...I like the idea, but that is a horrible day.

This is lame. All this is going to do is further congest air travel that day as mentioned above and also create additional suspicion among security officers. I'd rather know that air travel is safe and wait a few extra minutes for enhanced security check. I travel once p/week. I don't have a problem with it.

Chris, you really drank the kool-aid huh? What makes you think that submitting to this TSA practice is making air travel safer? I hope you realize that TSA agents can't even reliably spot guns in the existing x-ray detectors and will face similar challenges with this technology, not to mention that it doesn't help search body cavities. The only thing body scanners help is the bottom line of companies that make them.

Wait... maybe that's it! If the TSA gives us refreshments (like Kool-Aid) I don't think I have a problem with getting scanned. Frankly, if there was a pervert TSA agent out there, it's more of a punishment to stare at my fat ass anyway. BRING IT! hahaha.

@ AUPilotAU. . . I think clogging up the system on the busiest travel day of the year is the point.

The point of gumming up the works is to send a message to Big Brother. Taking nude pictures is not the way to stop terrorist acts. It's time to get real and stop with the political correctness. It's time to profile. Obama should fire Janet Napolitano and hire someone who will bring in ElAl to teach us how to provide security in the proper way.

Okay, so I am going to Washington to propose that we abolish the 4th amendment and allow police officers to search the homes of all of the people who are cool with having their civil liberties violated just because they want the process to be easier.

Moo Cow. Moo. It amazes me how many people are okay with letting the government do whatever it wants. We won't be upset by getting felt up, but we'll get upset at giving bailout money to companies that helped tank the economy with their business practices, or we'll get upset at the big three automakers for having luxury business jets and flying the D.C. to take a bailout.

Seems to me a body scanner is less intrusive than a pat down search. What are we supposed to do, given there are several thousand people out there who are looking for the opportunity to bring aircraft down with us in them? I don't really care if someone sees my "naked" image if it reduces the chances of a terrorist having an opportunity. Most people think that way.

Will they give us a 8X10 framed photo of our scan ? lol

Do the research. This is an x-ray machine...low level radiation...and other countries have banned them because they can cause breast, ovarian and testicular cancer. First it was water bottles, then all bottles, then shoes, now it is a genital pat down...and you don't think someone will not think to shove something in his bum and then we will all be subject to cavity searches from the knee jerk TSA? Think again.

Scott, what is your alternative suggestion? The bad guys are out there and they want to do harm. Yes, x rays can cause cancer, but at the minimum power we are talking about the chances are low. If the machine is not used then we have profiling as a semi alternative, which will raise even more constitutional questions, or we can just drive our cars and give up on flying entirely.

Fortunately, John, the bad guys aren't very good at doing us harm, and we are pretty good at stopping them. I can do the math. If they manage to take out one small domestic jet every 2.5 years (their current rate, and dropping), I'm much better off taking my chances with them on an airplane than I am taking my chances on a highway with you (and everybody else on this site) driving the car(s) next to me. No comment on your driving skills - all of us pose a greater threat as dangerous drivers than terrorists pose to domestic air travel.

I think the 4th amendment is worth that miniscule risk.

That's a risk I'm willing to take. Wait a minute, that's a risk I do take.

Scott, I think the bad guys are not good at doing us harm because we have systems in place to catch them or prevent them from doing or diverting them to other things. You are advocating the relaxation of safeguards that presumably have in the past prevented them from doing what they are trying to do, so statistically your couple of small jets will become more, etc. Besides, I think the scanner was designed to be less costly in time for passengers going through security. Since I fly as a passenger twice a week, I will take the scanner. I do not think of this as a breakdown of my 4th amendment rights but rather an improvement on my chances of not being victimized in a time of war. We are at war or else people would not be trying to kill us!

No, I'm recommending continued use of the safeguards that have been working just fine, without augmenting them by exposing my skin and eyes to potentially dangerous levels of radiation, while slowing down the line even further.

Every airport that I've traveled through that uses those things has been an excruciating experience. They are slower than molasses.

To sum up: Pros - potential slight reduction of an already tiny risk.
Cons: Invasive, photo of your junk potentially posted on the internet, additional risk of cancer, slower security line, additional capital and ongoing operating cost of these machines.

That's not a tough decision in my book. I'm never walking through one of these things.

Besides firing Napolitano let's fire her boss, Obama. With terrorists getting a non-military tribunal Obama's true colors are showing. I don't think body scanners are doing anything but making money for the system makers. Profile, questions, interrogate if suspicious, but nude shots? A really dumb non-sensical idea

When every member of Congress, District & Supreme Court, and Executive Branch of Government, and all their family members has publicly (on National TV), submitted to both of these over-reaching (no pun here), then I might buy off. Until then, we threw the British out for far less invasive practices!

Sounds like a plan. Those that dont want to do this must like either "showing" off their junk to others, or they are just perverts that like for same sex paople to fondle them. Sounds like Brian Berkowicz fits into one of these catagories...doesnt it folks?

One notable exception. Tonight on Fox News Gloria Allred said she enjoyed having someone touch her private parts. That explains a lot.

To Brian B.
"lets go ahead and clog up an already congested air travel system on one of the busiest days of the year...I like the idea, but that is a horrible day. "
That's the point. Hit 'em at the best possible time. When it's busy.

so yes, lets punish all the other people in the system on an already busy day. My coworkers and I already dread this day. The extra delays will affect everyone, not just TSA...

Brian Berkowicz...what are youo...a pervert that like to be felt up or a Communist? YOU are NOT that important to the world for anyone of us common folks to care if you or your coworkers dread this day. Nothing that you do is so important as to take away MY rights or MY freedoms. If you are "put-out" by what is being asked...too bad dude. Suck it up CUPCAKE...not all of us want to be felt up or looked at butt naked.

Security is a requirement. The method by which security is administered is the issue.
People are highly put off by the absence of respect for the paying customer. They are additionally enraged by the presumption of guilt based on the poor attitude shown toward the customer.
The slightest objection to the process by the customer is met with a harsh response by TSA people 100% of the time.
The problem here is the virtual environment of unprofessionalism shown by TSA people.

I was just informed they patted down my 74 year old sister in law before boarding a flight from Florida. the other day....
When she asked, she was told only Americans will be screened in this manner ?????
So the cargo under the floor and muslims will not ????
Seems like they've got safety all but guaranteed.

Question: How many would-be plane-killers have been caught by the present level of security equipment? None that I know of. Another question: How many more will be caught be the new, proposed equipment? Who are we kidding - there are at least 100,000 government employees charged with our safety in public and this is the BEST they can do? Fingers out! Leave my junk alone! Get on with the job in hand (no pun intended).
