One Of The World's Largest Oil Companies CEO Dies In Plane Crash
 
 

October 21, 2014 - A French built Dassault Falcon 50 corporate jet (F-GLSA) departing from Moscow's Vnukovo Airport for Paris crashed on Monday killing all four onboard. One of the passengers onboard was the CEO of France’s oil and gas giant Total S.A. 

Christophe de Margerie, 63, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Total, one of the six "Supermajor" oil companies in the world was the only passenger onboard, the other three onboard were crewmembers. 

The super mid-sized, long-range corporate jet, was on its takeoff roll under heavy fog and snow when its landing clipped a snowplow as the aircraft was departing the runway. The pilot declared emergency with air traffic control and reported the aircraft had been damage and one of the three engines was on fire. 

 

The pilot was cleared to return back to the airport and land on Runway 1. As the aircraft touched down the aircraft's landing collapsed, the aircraft flipped over and burst into a ball of fire killing all onboard. Total in a statement said "Total confirms with deep regret and great sadness that Chairman and CEO Christophe de Margerie died just after 10pm (Paris time) on October 20 in a private plane crash at Vnukovo Airport in Moscow, following a collision with a snow removal machine.” 

Christophe de Margerie Total after graduating from the École Supérieure de Commerce in Paris in 1974. He served in several positions in the Group’s Finance Department and Exploration & Production division. He became President of Total Middle East in 1995 before joining the Group’s Executive Committee as the President of the Exploration & Production division in May 1999.

He then became Senior Executive Vice President of Exploration & Production of the new TotalFinaElf group in 2000. In January 2002 he became President of the Exploration & Production division of Total. He was appointed a member of the Board of Directors by the Shareholders’ Meeting held on May 12, 2006 and became Chief Executive Officer of Total on February 14, 2007. He was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Total on May 21, 2010.
