Boy Flies To Rome Without Passport OR Ticket

An 11-year-old English boy who ran away from his mother during a shopping trip headed straight to Manchester airport to catch a flight to, well, anywhere but there.

Liam Corcoran was able to board a flight to Rome's Fiumicino Airport by "mingling with families" going through security, without having a passport or boarding pass, according to the BBC.

Corcoran ran to the nearest departing flight gate and was able to evade a head count before getting on a Jet2 flight. It wasn't until concerned passengers became suspicious of Corcoran's solo status during the flight that the plane's pilot radioed back to Manchester to alert authorities and the boy's worried mother, the Daily Mail reports.

Once the flight landed in Rome, Corcoran remained on board and returned to Manchester on the same plane. A passenger on his return flight told the Manchester Evening News: "He was very talkative and seemed quite un-fazed by it all. He just sat there chatting away about how he’d been trying to run away from home. He seemed quite innocent really and I don’t think it had sunk in how serious the situation was.”

A Manchester Airport spokesman told The Huffington Post UK:

This extremely serious matter is now being urgently investigated by officials from the airport and airline. It is clear that documentation has not been checked correctly at security and the boarding gate. The boy went through full security screening so the safety of passengers and the aircraft was never compromised.

Several airport employees and Jet2 employees have been suspended.

In August 2010, three kids eager to see Dollywood took a Southwest flight from Florida to Tennessee using babysitting money.
