What a beauty!!!

A good photo of a great plane with an interesting history. Our former South African Air Force chief was shot down during the Korean war in the early 1950's while flying one of these. Fortunately he survived the very harsh imprisonment conditions in Korea and encouraged many of us by sharing his experience with many.
Unfortunately no peace treaty was signed when the North Korean hostilities ended. This resulted in North- and South Korea still being technically at war.

Where is this Mustang? It is a dream of mine to get a ride.

Check out the Collings Foundation website for their Wings of Freedom Tour schedule. You can get a ride in the TF-51D for as little as $2200!

Why does it have a "TF" designation?

Will be in New Braunfels Texas this Saturday.

Okay, don't quote me on this, but I think the T is because it was built as a trainer, and the F after the air force switched from the P (pursuit) designation to the F (fighter) designation. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Greg Byington - I do believe you are absolutely right, sir!

This Mustang is a true dual control equipped "trainer" a/c.

According to Mr. Joe Baugher's published information and other information published on the "mustangmustang.com" site, this one, USAAF s/n 44-84655, was originally built as a single seat P-51D-25-NT Mustang at the Dallas plant with c/n 122-44511. Starting in early 1951 it underwent a Tempco done conversion to a re-designated TP-51D-25NT status (a dual control tandem seat trainer/fighter, née a trainer/pursuit type). The "P" prefix was, of course, later officially changed on an Air Force wide basis to "F" following the formal separation of the USAAF from the US Army and the establishment of the USAF in 1947.

Both sites offer a very comprehensive and detailed history of "Toulouse Nuts".
