It has been called Persian Gulf since 550 BC. The Arabs have been wanting to change it to Arabian Gulf since the 60's. At one time the Red Sea was called the Arabian Gulf. At one time the Persian Gulf was called the Red Sea. History is on the side of it being called Persian Gulf. Maybe Saudi Arabia should revert its name back to Arabia and leave the family of dictators name out of it. :)

As a teacher in Saudi Arabia once, I referred to the body of water to the east as the Persian Gulf. The class, mostly soldiers, erupted in anger and denial and I feared for my life. But I told them the larger body of water to the south was called the Arabian Sea. It calmed them somewhat and I was saved. In Korea to call the body of water to the east the Sea of Japan is to bring students to their feet in angry denial. It's the East Sea. You better believe it!
