Boeing E-6 Mercury (16-2784)
The crew of this US Navy E-6B Mercury (162784) is snapped here conducting a walk-around check of their aircraft as they prepare to button it up for an RON stay at RNO.
* My sincere Thanks to USN Lt Gore for the additional info he provided about this aircraft. Lt. Gore stated that this particular aircraft was one of the last 707s (see ** below) to come off the Boeing production line. According to the Lt., only a few more were built after this one.
** NOTE: The E-6 is one of the military variants of Boeing's 707-320.

Getting closeup captures of this E-6B Mercury was a fantastic finale to a wonderful day of photographing US military aircraft at RNO. I arrived at 10 AM and did not leave until 6:30 PM after I caught this one landing, taxiing, and being buttoned up (shown above). In the eight and a half hours I was out on the ramp, I snapped one USN Seahawk, four USMC F-18 Hornets, one USAF and two USN Tigers, one USMC C-130, this Navy E-6, and one USAF F-16 .... which just happened to be Thunderbird #8. All in all, an absolutely OUTSTANDING day!!
Congrats to You, Gary, on another very productive day of a/c spotting photo captures! This one is likely a rare visitor to RNO... and your commentary "back story" is exemplary!

Wow, love this. I hope these great airplanes continue to fly forever like the DC3s and C47s continue to do in civilian service. (Even with CFM engines probably unaffordable to fly in the civilian market. ) Can't tell, does the E-6 CFM engines have thrust reversers? The re-engined KC-135s don't.
